The Smashing Pumpkins es un grupo musical estadounidense de rock alternativo, formado en Chicago, Illinois, en 1988. Tras disolverse el 2 de diciembre de 2000, la agrupación anunció por medio de su sitio web oficial, el 20 de abril de 2006, una reunión y la grabación de un nuevo álbum.

The Smashing Pumpkins estaba compuesto originalmente por Billy Corgan (guitarra y voz), James Iha (guitarra), D’Arcy Wretzky (bajo) y Jimmy Chamberlin (batería). En 1997 Jimmy Chamberlin abandonó la agrupación (a la que volvería en 1999), siendo reemplazado por una serie de bateristas, entre los que se destacan a Matt Walker y Kenny Aronoff. En diciembre de 1999,D’Arcy Wretzky abandonó el grupo tras la grabación de Machina/The Machines of God, siendo reemplazada por Melissa Auf Der Maur.

En 2005 Billy Corgan anunció la intención de volver a reunir a The Smashing Pumpkins a través de un anuncio en un periódico de Chicago. La reunión se produjo el año 2007 de manera oficial y al poco tiempo se anunció la publicación de Zeitgeist. El nuevo disco del grupo, que salió al mercado el 10 de julio de ese mismo año, cuenta con la producción deRoy Thomas-Baker (Queen, The Cars) y Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden). Además deBilly Corgan y Jimmy Chamberlin, se añaden Jeff Schroeder (guitarra), Ginger Reyes(bajista) y Lisa Harriton (teclados), que apoyarán a los dos miembros originales en su gira tanto europea como americana. Desde el 22 de mayo del 2007 se puede adquirir vía iTunes el primer single del grupo tras casi 7 años, Tarantula.
